GEORGE Parkes is not only one of the youngest landlords in the country but also one of the best qualified.
The 25-year-old former student at Ludlow School and Ludlow College has just taken over as landlord at The Plough Inn in Wistanstow.
When George left college he went to Durham University to study for his Geography degree.
“It may seem an unusual way into the pub and hospitality business but I have no regrets doing my degree and am sure that it is helping me now,” he said.
The pub is owned by Woods Brewery in the village and has just re-opened after a week in which there has been renovation work and improvements to the kitchen.
Mr Parkes has ambitions for the pub that is open every day of the week except Tuesday including all day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“It is a great opportunity and we have some interesting ideas including perhaps introducing a cocktail night,” he added.
Mr Parkes said the pub is popular with visitors to south Shropshire and he is also keen to attract more regulars from the local area.
The pub provides full and part-time work for 10 people including a full time chef specialising in traditional pub food.
Although being young for a landlord Mr Parkes has more than 10 years experience in the pub business having started with a washing up job as a 14-year-old.
“I am really looking forward to the job which I see as an important and exciting opportunity,” he added.
