IT was a bittersweet weekend for Newcastle with a 2-0 win at Builth Wells Reserves in the Mid Wales South League on Saturday before suffering the agony with going out of their own Newcastle Cup competition after extra time in a thrilling 3-2 defeat to local rivals Bishop's Castle Town.
Newcastle dominated at Builth but it took them until just before half-time before finally making the breakthrough, Craig Morris picking out the impressive Rhodri Jones to score on his first start after a number of substitute appearances.
The second half continued in the same way and Newcastle wrapped up the win when Scott Oxford lobbed the keeper, Morris again the provider.
Sunday's semi-final was, as expected, a keenly contested affair with both sides having spells when they were on top.
Bishop's Castle hit the bar shortly before half time but Newcastle started the second half strongly and opened the scoring through leading scorer Craig Morris – a fine finish into the far corner.
Morris then put another effort just wide but his opener still looked to have been enough until the visitors snatched a 93rd minute equaliser following a hotly disputed corner.
Extra time saw Newcastle regain the lead through Zac Thrivilas but Castle were level at the turn before grabbing the winner from the penalty spot.
They will play Orleton in the final following their 2-1 win over Presteigne Reserves.
This Saturday, Newcastle are once again in semi-final action when they are at home in the Pip Samuel sponsored League Cup with Llanidloes Town Reserves (ko 2.30pm).
It was a good weekend for Castle as they also booked their place in the League Cup final with an excellent 4-0 win over Oakengates to set-up an all South Shropshire final against Clee Hill at AFC Telford United’s New Bucks Head ground.
Clee had to work a little harder to book their place in the final, a second-half James Clifford goal finally seeing them to a 1-0 win against AFC Wellington.
In the Premier Division of the Sportsjam Regional League, Church Stretton recorded a 2-1 win at home to Prees.
Two goals from James Byatt helped Orleton Colts to a 3-0 win against Herefordshire League Premier Division visitors Ledbury Town. Substitute Nathan Hardisty was also on target for Colts who head to Westfields Reserves this weekend.
In Division One, Tenbury Town were 3-2 winners at mid-table rivals Fownhope Reserves, the goals coming from Alex Bright, Adam Everall and Alex Lombardi.
But there was disappointment in the midweek final of the Herefordshire Junior Cup as they lost 2-0 to St John’s Howle Hill at allpay.park.
There is no game for Tenbury Town on Saturday – they are next in action on Tuesday at home to Orleton Colts Reserves – but Woofferton return to Division One duty with a table-topping clash at home to Holme Lacy (ko 2.30pm).
After last week’s excellent 3-2 defeat of league leaders Athletico Market, Norbury suffered a 3-1 defeat at Beacon in Division One of the Shrewsbury & District Sunday League, Andrew Edwards with the goal.
