STORE Cattle (October 14) – 705: A very good entry for the first of the autumn shows and sales and a nice firm level of demand. Plenty of buyers in attendance. A total clearance. All of the steers of whatever type, quality and size averaged 199p/kg to include some extreme dairy types. All of the heifers averaged 188p/kg and the bulls, again to include several extreme Friesians 202p/kg. Steers peaked at 250p/kg, heifers 238p/kg and feeding bulls 262p/kg. There was a good trade on the feeding cows with prices up to £800 and an overall average of £694. There was a total clearance of the young breeding bulls with a Limousin bull reaching £1,995. Cows and calves reached £1270 (only older cows on offer).

Store sheep – 3,050: A good level of demand on all of the store lambs. Plenty of buyers in attendance. Strong store lambs sold up to £82.50 and averaged £71.20. Medium store lambs to £66.50 average £64.10. Small store lambs to £61.20 average £58.90. Mini store lambs to £56.00 average £54.20.
An end of season entry of Ewes found a firm trade with yearlings to £151.00 for some Welsh Mules. Full mouthed ewes reached £100.00. There was a total clearance. The ewe lambs attracted keen competition with the winners of the TTE Brown Trophy for the best pen of ewe lambs going to C D Gayther and Son.
The prize winners in the show class for ewe lambs were 1st – C D Gayther and Son, Cwmygaist, 2nd – RGT and MA Powell, 3rd – C D Gayther and Son, Cwnygaist.
Texel cross ewe lambs reached £110.00 with other strong ewe lambs over £100.00. All of the ewe lambs of whatever type averaged just under £80.00 per head.
A variable entry of breeding rams met a firm trade. With Suffolk yearlings to £525 and Texel ram lambs to £241.50.
Calves and weanlings – 6: A very very good trade indeed. Rearing bull calves to £410.00 average £348.30, rearing heifer calves to £395.00 average £301.60.
Finished Cattle (October 17) – 197: A very disappointing entry in terms of numbers and a very good trade especially considering the deadweight prices are falling back. The quality of the yard of cattle was not as good as previous weeks but still steers reached 215.5p/kg and heifers 244.0p/kg. The bulls were a really good trade and there were nowhere near enough on offer. Bulls up to 231.0p/kg but it was the Friesians that were particularly dear selling between 170.0p and 190.0p. bit as dear this week as what they were.

Finished sheep – 2,641: A more difficult lamb trade with exporters complaining of a lack of demand on the Continent even with the pound as weak as it is.
