McCARTNEYS report an entry of 2624 breeding ewes and 10 ewe lambs at Knighton Market Grand Multi Breed Sale on September 11.
The included the Annual Prize Show and Sale of Yearling Ewes. The prize classes were kindly sponsored by HSBC with Mr Edward Jones as the judge. Results were as follows:
Class 1: Best Pen of 20 or more Welsh Mule Ewes (out of Beulah/Speckle Faced Ewes);
1st R H Jones, Llanhedric £140.
2nd N L Pugh & Co, Longville Farm £146.
3rd A T Bennett & Son, Bronrevel £148.
Class 2: Best Pen of 20 or more Welsh Mule Ewes (out of Welsh Ewes);
1st T A Swancott & Son, Lawn Farm £188 Champion Pen.
2nd R J Lewis, Lower Hall £165 Reserve Pen.
3rd N L Pugh & Co, Longville Farm £155.
Class 3: Best Pen of 20 or more Cross Bred Ewes;
1st E R Jones, Dolagored Fach £160.
2nd E R Jones, Dolagored Fach £160.
3rd P T & E G Williams, Maesycoed £130.
A strong entry of ewes considering the hard summer they have had with a superb trade to match. An overall average of £133.23 was achieved per head with the Champion Pen of Welsh Mules selling for £188 per head from T A Swancott & Son, Lawn Farm. Also to £168 per head for Texel cross ewes from A T Bennett & Son, Bronrevel. A strong run of Welsh Mule ewes from R J Lewis, Lower Hall Farm selling to £165 per head for the first pen and £164 for the second. £160 per head for Texel cross ewes from E R Jones, Dolagored Fach followed by a second pen of ewes from the same home selling to £160 also. £160 for White Face Mule ewes from A T Bennett & Son, Bronrevel.
Three year old ewes averaged £103.81 and sold to £108 for Suffolk ewes from A S L & D J Lewis, Cwmllechwedd Fawr.
Four your old ewes sold to £90 for Suffolk ewes from A S L & D J Lewis, Cwmllechwedd Fawr.
Ewe lambs averaged £159 per head and sold to £160 for Texel lambs from J P L Owens, Aberceithon.
