Pupils and staff at a school in Bishops Castle have tested negative for the Coronavirus.

However, a small number of students at Bishops Castle Community College are still waiting for their results.

The school is taking precautions after pupils and staff returned from Italy where the Coronavirus has spread. Some students were said to be showing flu-like symptoms after a ski trip in Claviere in northern Italy on Saturday, February 22.

Reuben Thorley, headteacher, said in a letter addressed to parents and carers on Friday, February 28: "Of the students and staff who have been tested and have received the results, none have come back as positive.

"We are still awaiting results from a small number of students; we hope that these results will become available at some point over the next few days.

"We continue to maintain communication with Shropshire Council and Public Health England to ensure that we are aware of any developments that take place.

"The school is ensuing that disposable tissues and hand sanitiser are available throughout the building and that cleaning procedures follow the increased requirements. It would help to keep viruses at bay if parents/carers could ensure that their own tissues at all times and, if possible, hand sanitiser."

As of Sunday, March 1, a total of 11,750 people have been tested in the UK, of which 11,715 were confirmed negative and 35 positive.

Public Health England's emeritus medical director Professor Paul Cosford has called on the public to take simple steps such as washing their hands and throwing away used tissues.

People are being reminded to follow Public Health England advice to:

  • Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
