A FATAL collision at an accident blackspot has further reinforced the need for action to be taken.

The A49 at Woofferton has seen a large number of accidents over the years with some of them fatal.

It is a stretch of roads that brings together a combination of vehicles travelling at high speed with vehicles emerging from both sides trying to join the traffic stream.

The area also has a pub, the Salwey Arms and a petrol station that residents claim has increased the risk.

Vivienne Parry, the Shropshire councillor for Ludlow South, has been fighting so far unsuccessfully for work to make the stretch of road safer for many years.

Residents living in the area have also campaigned to try to get the junction made safer.

“This is a very dangerous stretch of road and in addition to the many fatal and serious accidents there have been a lot of minor accidents and near misses,” Mrs Parry said.

“The latest fatal accident is just another illustration of the importance of doing something.”

Ideas have included the installation of traffic lights or a roundabout.

But up to now all have been rejected on the grounds of cost.

Police have renewed their call for information about the fatal accident in October.

West Mercia Police said it believes there are more witnesses to the crash, which happened on the A49 at Woofferton in October at around 7.30pm on October 30, a blue Vauxhall Corsa and grey Skoda Fabia were involved in a head-on crash, police said.

The driver of the Skoda, an elderly woman, suffered serious injuries and died as a result.

PC Sian Price said: “We’ve received some information which has been extremely helpful however we believe there were some further witnesses at the scene who we would be keen to talk to.”

Anyone with information should call on 101 quoting incident 578- of 30 October or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
