A NATIONALLY recognised project in Ludlow is closing its doors but will continue to operate online.
The South Shropshire Furniture Scheme has been a feature of the town for many years but has announced that its physical presence in Ludlow is to end.
‘Earlier this week we informed our staff that we have taken the difficult decision to close The Furniture Scheme store and move to supporting Ludlow communities with an online presence,’ said a statement.
‘Where possible, staff here will be offered the chance to redeploy to other sites, and we will continue to support our Wrekin Reviive stores in Shrewsbury and Oswestry.
‘The Furniture Scheme will still be available to residents of Ludlow and the surrounding area via our online delivery service – https://www.wrekinreviive.com/onlineshop/
‘We wish to express our thanks to everyone for supporting the store over the years, as well as the employees and volunteers who have provided a stellar service to the community.’
The scheme was founded to provide furniture for families that had split, often as a result of domestic violence.
It provided furniture needed to make a new start and depended upon donations from the public.
The scheme proved to be very successful and provide a model that was followed in other places.
As well as supporting families the scheme also provided jobs and training opportunities for people who have been involved in the refurbishment of furniture.
Furniture and other items that could not be sold or were not considered suitable for sale could be brought from the shop in Ludlow town centre, where it was also possible to eat and get a drink in a small cafe.
Ludlow town and Shropshire councillor Vivienne Parry said the closure of the Furniture Scheme was a big blow.
This was echoed by Andy Boddington, Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow North.
