A RIVERSIDE footpath in Ludlow that has been closed for more than three years is due to be repaired in the summer.
The public path by the river Teme is popular for many walkers. However, two footbridges were destroyed by storm Dennis that battered the county in February 2020.
Parts of the railing also need replacing, with the steps muddy and unsafe to use.
"Although it is appreciated that no repairs could be carried out during the pandemic, the public footpath needs to be revived and reopened for the health and wellbeing of our community."
A spokesperson for Shropshire Council said: "We are sorry that the footpath has had to be closed due to natural erosion of the riverbank, but public safety and ecological concerns are important factors in the decision.
"The 185 metre stretch affected by the closure is in a Site of Scientific Interest due to its special character and habitat, which further restricts our actions and interventions.
"We also have limited options when working on riverbanks, especially sites such as this with limited access, and would have to seek permission from partner organisations such as the Environment Agency for permissions to carry out riverbank repairs, which could only be carried out within a limited timeframe.
"The route is not designated as part of the Shropshire Way as natural erosion on that stretch of the river has long been recognised.
"As soon as the weather allows Shropshire Council will repair the handrail and steps on the bridge."
