THE SPEED limit could be slashed on a busy south Shropshire main road in a bid to reduce crashes.

Shropshire Council is holding a consultation over plans to cut the speed limit on the A4117 between Clee Hill and Doddington village from 60 miles per hour to 50 miles per hour.

The council said the one-and-a-half-mile stretch of the road, from 34 metres northeast of the Midland Quarry access road to a point 111 metres south-west of St John’s Church junction (lane to Earls Ditton) is currently subject to the national speed limit.

But, the council said, the carriageway cuts through common grassland where livestock roam freely.

Over the years, there have been a number of crashes involving livestock being struck on the carriageway, Shropshire Council said.

It is hoped that cutting the speed limit to 50 miles per hour will provide drivers with more time to react to livestock in the carriageway and reduce the number of collisions on the busy road, increasing safety for both road users and livestock.
