A Ludlow father and son are in training for the ride of their lives.
Robert and Basil Marsden-Smedley will set off at the end of June on the 250-mile, four-day Big Battlefields Bike Ride in Northern France in aid of Help for Heroes.
Robert, a former insurance broker, admits that, until now, neither he nor Basil has ridden more than 10 miles. "The shortest day we'll face is 50 miles and the longest about 70," he says.
The pair have been inspired to take up the challenge as an opportunity for some father-son bonding, and through a desire to get fit and support Help for Heroes.
The Big Battlefields Bike Ride starts on June 24 from Sainte-Mere-Eglise in Northern France visiting D-Day beaches Omaha, Gold and Juno and following the path of British expeditionary forces, exploring Bayeux, Lisieux and Bernay. The challenge then ends in Paris on Armed Forces Day, June 29.
Robert and Basil are funding the trip themselves, so any donations will go straight to the charity.
