ACTION is being taken after Tesco confirmed it will be closing Ludlow's main Post Office.
The Tower Street site is important to many Ludlow locals, with several village post offices around the area having closed in recent years.
But the town centre post office is now set to close its doors after Tesco announced its plans to close the concession in their One-Stop shop.
The post office currently provides essential services for locals, including banking services, parcels and access to pensions.
The upcoming closure will see locals having to travel further for these services, with the remaining Post Office in Gravel Hill, half a mile away from Tower Street.
Ludlow Town Council, in a statement on their website, said that the loss of the post office would be “a major blow to the local economy” and that the impact on local residents would be “devastating”.
Phillip Dunne, MP for Ludlow, said he is “deeply concerned” by Tesco’s proposals.
Explaining when he was informed about the closure, Mr Dunne said: “I wrote to the Chief Executive of Tesco to seek an urgent meeting with top management to discuss the significance of this Post Office and why Tower Street is such a good location for it to be maintained”
Tesco has a dominant position in Ludlow, so it should carry the weight of that responsibility in considering the services it provided.”
Mr Dunne and Stuart Anderson, MP candidate for South Shropshire, are calling on Tesco to reverse their decision. Mr Anderson has since set up a page on his website, for residents to share their views on the impending closure.
Tesco has announced that it intends to close the Post Office in two months' time, but has not given a reason for the closure.
