HISTORIC military vehicles and much more will be on display in Shropshire this weekend.

The Abbey Station Visitor Centre in Shrewsbury will be commemorating the building's role as an air raid precautions post during the Second World War.

The free event will take place from 10.30am to 4pm on May 4 and 5.

The trustees of Shrewsbury Railway Heritage Trust have had the valuable assistance of local collector and WW2 enthusiast, Nick Holden who will be displaying some of his collection including an original Shropshire and Montgomery Railway lamp, an unrestored 1930s Hercules ARP military bicycle, a 1947 Mercury Army bicycle and a Royal Enfield motorcycle.

SRHT director and committee member David Morris has been planning the event with Nick Holden and Pip Robinson of the Shropshire and Border Counties Area Military Vehicle Trust.

Mr Morris said Abbey Station was reopened to service the line the War Department had re-laid to take staff and armaments to Nesscliffe.

"This small railway played an important role in the ‘big picture’ of winning the war, with 200,000 tons of ammunition transported to and from the Nesscliffe and Kinnerley area," he said.

"Abbey Station will play host to what promises to be a splendid exhibition of  memorabilia, to commemorate what must have been the busiest time for our railway.”
