A LUDLOW café is this week is celebrating a special birthday.
Castle Lodge Buttery is next to the historic Castle Lodge that was at one time home of Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of King Henry VIII.
She had been married to Henry’s older brother Arthur, who died before his father King Henry VII.
This week, the café marked its 19th birthday after being set up by mother and daughter, Wendy and Rebecca Kirby in 2005.
"We've got a lot of lovely regular customers," said Rebecca, who was just 21 when the business started.
"A lot come in on their own and we've got to know them."
As well as serving breakfasts and daytime meals, the café is also popular for its homemade cakes.
"We use local produce and locally sourced meats," added Rebecca.
"You've always got to keep thinking on your feet to keep going and get people interested. It's about thinking outside the box a bit.
"Sometimes there are really busy days, but other times a bit quieter.
"The weather plays a big part though."
On reviews website Tripadvisor, the café scores a four-star rating out of five, with it being ranked second in Ludlow for quick bites.
One reviewer said that he is never disappointed.
"Amazing as always and a brilliant selection of cakes," he said.
"I highly recommend the shakes and ice cream, a wide variety of choice. It’s better to get there early because it does get busy."
Another added: "Consistently excellent food and service here, we’re locals and visit quite often for breakfast and lunch. Don’t look at the cakes, you won’t be able to resist."
Last year, Castle Lodge Butter was allowed to sell alcohol to customers after being granted a license by Shropshire Council.
The application was made to give customers the chance to buy an alcoholic drink with their meals.
The café is open 9am until 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 4.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
