Heifers sold for thousands at a recent cattle auction in Shropshire.

Prices reached up to £2,850 at Bishop's Castle & District Quality Cattle Association’s successful sale of 450 store cattle last week (April 25).

Buyers were packed around the sale ring at Bishops Castle Auction with top quality cattle on offer, producing “an excellent trade throughout” for Halls auctioneers.

The prize sale, which included potential show cattle, was sponsored by Wynnstay Group and judged by Gary and Meinir Howells from Carmarthenshire.

The champion’s award and first prize for steers went to  E. H. Pennie & Son, Llandyssil with a £2,000 steer and reserve champion and first prize for heifers went to  J. A. Wood & Son, Kinnerton, Ratlinghope with a £2,200 heifer.

Overall steers averaged 311p per kilo and £1,363 per head with highs of 386.9p kilo for a 305 kilo Limousin from Bowen & Bowen, Penthryn, Berriew and £2,020 for a British Blue from E. H. Pennie & Son.

Heifers averaged 307p per kilo and £1,260 per head to a high of 548.1p per kilo and £2,850 for a 520 kilo British Blue from the Pennie family.

A good entry of feeding bulls also sold well to average 260p per kilo and £1,010 per head with top prices of £1,276 from M. & A Powell, Drefor, Kerry, £1,260 from F. R. Williams, Penstrowed, Newtown and £1,160 from G. E. Balmer, Snailbeach.
