Buyers were packed around the sale ring at Bishops Castle Auction last week with top quality cattle on offer.
Heifers sold for up to £2,850 at Bishops Castle & District Quality Cattle Association’s successful sale of 450 store cattle.
The prize sale, which included potential show cattle, was sponsored by Wynnstay Group and judged by Gary and Meinir Howells from Carmarthenshire.
The champion’s award and first prize for steers went to EH Pennie & Son, Llandyssil with a £2,000 steer and reserve champion and first prize for heifers went to JA Wood & Son, Kinnerton, Ratlinghope with a £2,200 heifer.
Overall steers averaged 311p per kilo and £1,363 per head with highs of 386.9p kilo for a 305 kilo Limousin from Bowen & Bowen, Penthryn, Berriew and £2,020 for a British Blue from E. H. Pennie & Son.
Heifers averaged 307p per kilo and £1,260 per head to a high of 548.1p per kilo and £2,850 for a 520 kilo British Blue from the Pennie family.
A good entry of feeding bulls also sold well to average 260p per kilo and £1,010 per head with a top price of £1,276 from M. & A Powell, Drefor, Kerry.
Other leading steer prices were: British Blue cross: £2,020 per head for Messrs E. H. Pennie & Son and 359.10p per kilo for Messrs J. A. Wood & Sons. Stabiliser: Leading heifer prices were British Blue cross: £2,850 per head and 548.10p per kilo for Messrs E. H. Pennie & Son. Charolais cross: £1,820 per head and 391.40p per kilo for Messrs E. H. Pennie & Son. Limousin cross: £2,350 per head and 484.50p per kilo for Messrs J. A. Wood & Sons.
Leading prices for store bulls: British Blue cross: £1,275 per head for Messrs M. & A. Powell and 279.10p per kilo for Messrs R. P. G. Corfield, Upper Mill, Wentnor.
