Halls auctioneers reported a total clearance of 150 quality store cattle which generated a very strong trade at Bishops Castle Auction on Thursday, May 9.

Overall steer averages were 282p per kilo and £1,435 per head with highs of 364p per kilo for a 395 kilo Limousin from RR Jones & Sons, Glynhafren, Old Hall, Llanidloes and £1,845 for a 700 kilo British Blue from CJ Collins, Cowsden Bank, Pershore.

Other leading steer prices were: Blonde cross: £1,660 per head and 286.20 per kilo for Messrs FJ Owens & Co, Llettygynfach, Forden; Charolais cross steers: £1,380 per head for Messrs JE Lewis, Trevada, Newcastle and 302.60p per kilo for Messrs RF Gough & Son, New House Farm, Newcastle.

Heifers averaged 265p per kilo and £1,126 per head to a high of 348.6p per kilo for pair of 370 kilo Limousins from IE & M Gittins, Lower Ucheldre, Brooks and £1,630 for a 610 kilo British Blue from CJ Collins.

Other leading heifer prices were: Blonde cross: £845 per head and 231.60p per kilo for Messrs JC Richards, Hopes Castle, Felindre. ; Charolais cross: £1,470 per head for Messrs JE Lewis and 281.90p per kilo for Messrs RF Gough & Son; Simmental cross: £1,220 per head and 225.90p per kilo for Messrs JE Lewis.

An excellent run of young bulls from the Gittins family sold well to average 305p per kilo and £1,271 per head to notable highs of £1,430, £1,390, £1,350 and £1,300.

Halls’ next store cattle sale at Bishops Castle Auction, on Thursday, June 6, will include a genuine reduction sale of Stabiliser cattle on behalf of the Plowden Farm Partnership, Myndtown House, Bishops Castle. Entries close on Thursday, May 30 at 12 noon.

The reduction sale will include 30 autumn calving cows of various ages with calves at foot,10 spring calving cows of various ages with calves at foot, 10 spring calving heifers with calves at foot and three bulling heifers.
