Ludlow could be getting a brand-new dentist surgery, after a planning application has been submitted to Shropshire council.
A planning application was submitted on August 15 for the property on Corve Street, which is currently occupied by Bed and Breakfast accommodation and a retail space on the ground floor.
According to the submitted planning documents, this is not the first time an application has been made for the property. In May 2022 planning was granted with a small number of conditions in order to “protect the character of the building”.
The application for the property, which is on the east of Corve Street and adjacent to Tesco, was submitted by Mr Zia Rehman who plans to relocate his current practice on the same street, Corve Street Family Dental Practice.
The Corve Street building is described as a Grade II Listed structure, that was constructed in the early 19th century. The two-story building features a "brick facade and pitched roof" and is currently comprised of the retail and accommodation space.
The architects, Edwards Design group said on the application that the design principles for the proposed development are to “retain and enhance the existing character and heritage of the building, while adapting it to provide a modern and comfortable dental practice”.
The firm added that any new materials and colours used for the construction would be "sympathetic" to the existing building and the surrounding area.
In a statement on the planning application, the architect firm added that the building's “historic features”, which include timber beams and brickwork, “will be preserved and restored, while new features will be added to provide modern amenities and facilities”.
The application concluded that the proposed changes would be beneficial to local residents as “On a national level there is currently a great demand for both dentists and dental services for the community."
"Moving location will allow the surgery to expand to provide more dental capacity for local residents." The statement added.
Any comments on the application to change the use of the building should be made at Shropshire.gov.uk by Tuesday September 10.
