A MAJOR update has been issued over the future of a much-loved Ludlow event.

Anita Bigsby, managing director and founder of the Ludlow Fringe Festival, has announced her intention to stand down from running this popular festival and to leave it in the very capable hands of the Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

She had previously said she would be taking a sabbatical in 2024, with the trustees of Ludlow & District Community Association Ltd, the charity behind Ludlow Assembly Rooms, delivering Ludlow Fringe 2024.

Ms Bigsby said it has not been an easy decision, with the festival becoming a big part of her life over the last 13 years.

"I am very proud of what I have achieved in growing such a popular, welcoming and diverse festival that really has delivered something for everyone and found its way into the heart of our community," she said.

"We have seen thousands and thousands of people every year getting involved in all sorts of ways as performers, contributors, customers, audience, employees, volunteers and supporters, and it has helped to keep our streets alive with visitors coming from all over the country to experience our wonderful town and the amazing things it has to offer.

Ms Bigsby said she was grateful and privileged to have worked with "such wonderful people" and that she thanked every one of them for the support, help, and laughs shared over the years.

But, she said, with a growing programme of events comes extra need for staffing and organisation.

"This is where I feel it will be much better placed under the management of the Ludlow Assembly Rooms," Ms Bigsby said.

"I’m also very excited to be able to devote more time to my own creative pursuits and to get back into my studio developing my own artwork."

This year's festival, which took place over 10 days in June, was based around the theme of love.

The event promised theatre, comedy, circus, poetry, magic and more, with big names such as Alistair McGowan and Jo Brand among headliners.

Ms Bigsby said she wishes Ludlow Assembly Rooms every success with the festival and looks forward to seeing it grow.
