With the full moon adding an extra layer of atmosphere, the launch event of the Ludlow Town Walls Trust on Friday, November 15 will be remembered for a long time as something special.

Having recently been revived to help facilitate the repair to the section of the wall which collapsed in 2013, the Town Walls Trust opened its fundraising campaign with a Lantern Walk around the town’s Medieval Walls.

After a short welcome from Colin Richards, Chair of the Trust, and the town mayor, Councillor Beverley Waite, more than 40 people set off from the Garden of Rest with their torches and lanterns.

Led by Roger Furniss and Phil Horsfall, both veteran town tour guides, participants followed the route of the walls around the town, learning some of its history, ancient and modern, and meeting some of its characters as they went, including a 14th century archer, the steward of the Palmers Guild, the keeper of Linney Gate and Marion de la Bruyere.

The event raised over £200 but just as significantly, it also raised the profile of the Ludlow Town Walls Trust.

“As a first fundraiser event, the Lantern Walk was a huge success,” Colin Richards said. “Everyone involved loved it, including the characters who added something really special – and as for the moon, well, we just couldn’t have asked for anything more!”

The Lantern Walk will be repeated on Monday, December 30, although minus the moonlight, and numbers, again, will be limited. To book a place, call 07786 620 624.
