ONE of Herefordshire's best-known members of the farming community has died suddenly in Hereford Hospital.

Bill Phillips, aged 72, formerly of The Batch, Sarnesfield, was one of Herefordshire's greatest farming ambassadors and had probably won more top show accolades than any other livestock producer in the area.

Auctioneer Terry Court of Brightwells, who had known Mr Phillips for more than half a century, described him as a great showman who was enthusiastic about his work and his stock.

It was fitting that his son Colin and daughter-in-law Wendy collected two first prizes with heifers at the opening of the 14th Royal Welsh Winter Fair at Builth Wells on Monday.

Colin also collected a third with his father's favourite Limousin-cross steer.
