A MOTORIST has died in another accident at a notorious section of the A49 at Ashton.

One person in the car, who had not been named by police before the Advertiser went to press, died following a collision with a lorry yesterday (Wednesday).

A total of three vehicles were involved: a Daf goods vehicle, a silver Peugeot 206 and a green Saab 9000.

Police were alerted to the accident at about 8.30am and attended, along with the fire and ambulance services.

No-one was trapped in the vehicles and the police closed the road from the Kimbolton turning for several hours.

Diversions were set up by Amey Mouchel, using the B4361 at Leominster and B4362 at Comberton and Brimfield.

The accident happened on the notorious bend of the A49 by Berrington Hall, just 100 yards north of the site of a major incident last June. Two men died after their lorries collided head on.

That smash sparked an inferno which gutted a near-by cottage.

That tragedy renewed calls for a bypass on the A49 and even Tony Blair promised to look into the state of the road.

He told Leominster MP Bill Wiggin that he would look into the matter and write back with details as to what could be done.

Police are appealing for witnesses to yesterday's collision and say they also want to speak to any motorist who was using the road at the time who may have seen the three vehicles before the accident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Richard Pearce at Hereford Police Station on 08457 444888.
