THE increased popularity of Hereford cattle helped draw record entries in the herd competition organised by Hereford Cattle Breeders Association.

With more than 20 herds to inspect over four days, the judge, Aled Edwards, currently chairman of the British Limousin Society, had no easy task in deciding the winners.

He awarded the Anne Hamer Cup for the best large herd to Border Herefords, belonging to Mr and Mrs S Quan, Benarth, Wormbridge.

Runner-up was Free Town Herefords, R A Bradstock and Partners, Tarrington, and third, Bosa Herefords, G and R Blandford, Bosbury.

The Tony Sargeant Memorial Cup for the small herd went to Longville Herefords, A Owen, Much Wenlock, with Oaklea Herefords, F Arrowsmith, Marden, in reserve and Minton Herefords, C W and P M Leake, Withington, placed third.

The Clive and Sylvia Richards Cup for the heifer calf went to Llancillo Hall Herefords, Pandy, with Beauty (sire Border General).

The Border Libertine Cup for the bull calf was won by Ford Abbey Herefords of Docklow, with Amazon (sire Dendor 1 Unicorn).

After the awards presentation, hosted by Mr and Mrs Quan, Mr Edwards said it was very gratifying to see the depth of quality of the cattle.

"It was also a great pleasure to see the renewed interest in the Hereford breed in its home area among the existing and many new enthusiasts."
