FRESH from its recent success with Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, Leominster Choral Society is about to begin rehearsals for its next two concerts and is looking for new members.
The first concert, on November 6, features English music spanning four centuries, from Thomas Tallis to John Tavener, and includes Ralph Vaughan Williams's unaccompanied Mass in G minor.
Vaughan Williams was the son of a clergyman but described himself as an agnostic.
However, he strongly believed that the popular traditions of the English church music were important in the national make-up.
One of his greatest pleasures was conducting Bach's St Matthew Passion.
In his Mass, Vaughan Williams drew on his respect for Tudor music and created a work of startling beauty.
The second concert, on December 18, is the traditional Carols by Candlelight.
Both events are in Leominster Priory.
Rehearsals start next Tuesday in Leominster Baptist Church Hall. Sessions start at 7.20pm and last until 9.30pm, including a break.
Singers come from a wide area, said choral society chairman Philip Baldwin. If you want to join, ring him on 01568 613513.
