With regards to the words spoken by David Lloyd at the meeting in Palmers Hall on December 11 that "Ludlow should not be wedded to the past" seems ironic. David Lloyd, noted historian on Ludlow, has made a name for himself with his lectures and renderings about Ludlow's past.
I, and most Ludlovians, would agree that Ludlow should go forward into the future but not if architects (who are designing buildings just to make a statement and a name for themselves) try to convince the public that glass and steel industrial- type structures are the way to go for progress!
These buildings have their place but only if they are built in the appropriate areas -- certainly not in the historic heart of Ludlow.
These architects have little regard for the irreversible impact this will make on the surroundings of the immediate residents.
David Lloyd knows full well that Ludlow is now dependent on tourism. His town walks point out the historic buildings and history of the conservation area that attract thousands of visitors from home and abroad. How long will they last if the planners accept this proposed steel building? Once a precedent has been set there will be no going back!
