THE centre of Ludlow would be a safer place if shopkeepers kept their windows illuminated at night.
The town's Chamber of Commerce said the street lighting in some central areas was of poor quality and so was "an asset to vandals and criminals".
The expanding coverage by CCTV has made a difference in the town centre but Mayor Graeme Kidd said: "Lighting is another way of making the streets safer.
"If shopkeepers had even one very small bulb in their windows it would add to the ambient lighting in the town centre."
Most of the town's shop windows will be ablaze with light on the three nights of next week's Late Night Ludlow.
Philip Dunne, who represents Ludlow St Laurence's Ward on South Shropshire District Council, said old people in particular would feel safer if the idea was extended.
"This would be an excellent idea," he added. "But it has to be on a voluntary basis. There must be no element of compulsion."
