THE Bird on the Rock Tearoom in Clungunford has scooped not one but two major titles in the 2003 Les Routiers Awards.
Proprietors Doug and Annabel Hawkes, who took over the tearoom about five years ago, were at the Four Seasons Hotel in Park Lane, London, to collect the Les Routiers Central England Caf of the Year Award.
To their surprise and delight they were also called to accept the prestigious Les Routiers National Caf of the Year Award.
Classic
The award judges said of the caf: "Mrs Beeton meets the 1930s in a 21st century time frame just about sums up this classic tearoom run by enthusiasts who have brought their design and stage skills to an ever-growing appreciative public.
"Bread, cakes, herb scones and the like are from Mrs Beeton's original recipes and they are perfect.
"The Victoria sponge is a must."
The Hawkes' already produce their own packets of Shropshire Blend tea and their tearoom, formerly the Rocke Arms dating back to 1696, now incorporates a Tea Emporium selling some of the finest and rarest teas in the world.
