A SOUTH Shropshire school has launched an innovative project to improve its playground, described by a teacher as "a bare strip of narrow grey tarmac".
With the mischievous acronym 'SLAP', St Lawrence's Action Playground aims to involve the Church Stretton community and the school in designing, funding and making the necessary changes.
"We want to create a vibrant and stimulating playground," said reception teacher Beth Rowe.
"The outdoor facilities are pretty bleak and the children find it hard to think of creative ways to play.
"We want to create different zones, a performance structure and a special stone wall for role playing.
The first phase will require some £700 of funding and then another £3,000 for the whole development. A group of enthusiastic and supportive parents will work with the school to create something special.
Local businesses are also being approached to become official 'friends' of the project.
