AN 18th century cottage with links to smuggling and fallen women has just come on the market.

Ludlow estate agents Nock Deighton are seeking offers in the region of £270,000 for Skirmidge Cottage, a mile up a single track near Stoke St. Millborough. For such a remote setting, it is full of stories.

According to local legend, it was once the scene of desperate skirmishes between smugglers and excise officers. That is how it got its name. In later years, according to its owner David King, "women unfortunate enough to be expecting a child out of wedlock were brought here to give birth and recuperate, far away from the prying eyes of Ludlow society."

The cottage dates from around 1700 and is grade II listed. It was recently restored and includes a dining room with inglenook fireplace and a bread oven.

The gardens include a small orchard and a pond stocked with fish. The property has views of Titterstone Clee, Corvedale and Wenlock Edge and the Long Mynd. Ludlow is just over six miles away.
