Residents living near a road notorious for speeding traffic could be issued with "speed guns" to help police catch offenders.

The B4368 Craven Arms-Bridgnorth road has seen a spate of serious accidents, including three fatalities, in recent months. A well-attended public meeting in Diddlebury brought various suggestions as to how the problem could be tackled.

Inspector John Peyton said a pilot scheme is currently being operated in Herefordshire whereby residents are issued with high-visibility coats and speed guns. They take the numbers of persistent speeders and then pass them on to the police.

"Police officers assess the site and then the public take registration number of offenders. Those numbers are traced and a warning letter is sent to the keeper of the car. If we get repeated offences by the same vehicle we will take further action.

"It's an information service for us and it will help identify the places where speeding is a problem and where further traffic-calming measures could be used," said Inspector Peyton.

About 150 people turned up at the Diddlebury meeting and Shropshire County Council highways department is now considering further measures to slow people down, including a 30mph limit through all villages on that road.
