art lovers in Clun are divided over where to hold next August's art and crafts show, which will form part of the annual carnival.

This year it was held in Tim Wood's Old Surgery Gallery. Now some want the show to go into shops, pubs and the windows of suitable houses in the centre. But one artist, who regularly exhibits at the Old Surgery, thinks that is a bad idea.

Wendy Lantos, one of the organisers, said this year's show was "notably successful in some ways" but was perhaps not different enough from the gallery's regular exhibitions. By going out into the streets of Clun, "there might be room for more of each artist's work and for a greater range of crafts than was possible in the Old Surgery."

But artist Gordon Yapp is unconvinced. "It won't work," he said, "would anyone want one of their paintings hanging next to a leg of lamb in a butcher's shop?"

"Exhibitions are not just about showing paintings," he explained. "They're about getting people together. Anyway there are not enough shops or houses with suitable windows in Clun."
