PICCADILLY has Eros, Gateshead has the Angel of the North and Copenhagen has the Little Mermaid. What sculpture then should grace the new Craven Arms town square?
Suggestions so far include a sheep or two, something to do with steam railways, a few chickens or even a life-size Claude Bodenham!
The idea is to have a statue, to reflect the town's past, present or future. The subject matter, material and style will be decided, it is hoped, with input from the community.
As the town's 19th century prosperity was built on sheep and steam it is possible these could be the basis for the design. But chickens too have a part in the town's economy. A statue of Councillor Bodenham has been suggested by at least one resident.
Matt Smith, development officer for Craven Arms Together, has the task of co-ordinating ideas and artists to produce a result.
"The key thing is that whatever goes on the town square, it will be controversial. We hope to find a local artist to do the piece and we've had a lot of interest so far. The result could be fashioned from traditional bronze, or be a modernist welding; we are open to ideas"
