CLARE Carmichael, the 38-year-old mother of two who survived a vicious attack at her home in September 2001, attended a special ceremony at which she thanked the two police officers who saved her life.
Police Constables Dave Boot and Martin Broomfield were first on the scene of the attack that almost killed Clare at her former marital home near Leintwardine. For their speedy actions, which included stemming the flow of blood from multiple wounds in Clare's skull, the officers received Chief Constable's Commendations.
West Mercia Constabulary honoured Clare in turn. She received a Courageous Citizen's Award for not only surviving the attack but for the determination in the way she has coped after it. Clare has fought back from near fatal injuries to achieve her independence.
Clare and her family were at the Three Counties Hotel in Hereford to see the officers honoured and to say thank you to them.
Chief Supt Guy Rutter said to Clare: "We're absolutely delighted to be able to share this evening with you and your family.
"Your fantastic recovery says so much about the kind of person you are - your strength and sheer grit determination - long may it continue and we all wish you well for the future."
