A GROUP of children from St Laurence's Primary School, Church Stretton, paid their own tribute to the town's war dead last Thursday.

They planted union flags at six graves of people who died for their country and are buried in the Cunnery Road Cemetery. They also planted flags at nearly 20 more stones that bear the names of war dead who are either buried elsewhere or have no known grave.

"I think they all found it a moving event," said head teacher Dick Langford. "The children are from Year Six so are aged 10 or 11. They did a lot of work tracing the graves, with the help of the Royal British Legion."

As the children planted the flags at 11am, a full-size union flag was flown from a new pole donated by McCarthy & Stone. Church Stretton Town Council, which sponsored the initiative, will store the flag for use in future years.

The Royal British Legion held its traditional Remembrance Sunday Parade from the Church Stretton Social Club to St Laurence Parish Church.

Following a service, there was a procession to the town's war memorial for the laying of wreaths.
