PROMOTERS of a new retail park on the outskirts of Ludlow have claimed it will help enhance the town centre and have "no adverse effect" on the number of vacant shops.
The 6.6-acre development, at Foldgate Lane, on the western edge of the A49 and opposite the planned Eco-business Park, will include a massive non-food retail unit, intended for B&Q. It will require two acres of open hard-standing for "builder's yard and garden centre use".
Shrewsbury-based building company chief Graham Bennett also plans a fast food development, a petrol filling station with an associated convenience store.
There will be around 325 car spaces and the park will provide around 300 jobs.
South Shropshire District Councillor Richard Phillips said the development "offers opportunities for DIY enthusiasts, instead of one outlet in the town and offers another alternative for petrol."
He added: "Young people will have the opportunity to enjoy a restaurant more in line with their culture. I hope it will not be as controversial as the Eco-Park."
A guessing game involves the identity of the fast food firm. One possible favourite, McDonald's, said: "We have no plans at the moment to seek planning permission in Ludlow."
Mr Bennett's agents, Roger Tym and Partners, said the plan would "help to stimulate future private investment in Ludlow" and would enhance the town centre's role in the economic and social life of the community
It would also help improve the physical condition of the town centre and its range of services.
If planning permission is granted, Mr Bennett hopes to complete it towards the end of 2005.
