After weeks of preparation by Clee Hill Victors, last Sunday's McConnel sponsored mid-summer Motocross meeting was a great success.
Over 140 riders turned up to challenge for the trophies and with the sun shining, a large crowd gathered to enjoy the day's action.
The inter-juniors got things underway. All these riders, aged between 10 and 14 years old, displayed great skill as they sped around the Llan track. However it was Clee Hill youngster Rob Jones who stylishly cruised to overall victory. Rob's older brother, Ben then lined up in the following races, the Expert 750cc group. And just like his younger brother, Ben rode his Valvo-line Honda to a fine win. It was another Clee Hill member, Justin Bolton who was the overall victor in the 250cc Expert category, again with three straight wins.
Unstoppable
Next local interest came in the Senior 250/750cc class. Here Anth-ony Morris was unstoppable, in the 750s, convincingly taking all the race wins. McConnel-sponsored rider Graham Oliver had to overcome a bad start in his first race to eventually come out third on the day. Relatively new to the Senior ranks, Karl Swinbourne and Steve Gitt-oes both rode extremely well and both just missed out on a trophy. However, Gittoes was voted Rider of the day.
Next up came the ultra competitive Expert 125cc races.
International riders Jamie Powell and Richie Chinn only just managed to hold off the hard charging Clee Hill Victors of Mark Lewis (third) riding the Vavoline, MXT Honda, Terry Jukes, (fourth) on his Morris oils, CAT Honda and Wayne Griffiths (fifth) on the CG car repairs Honda.
Eventful
The Victors 125cc juniors rounded things off with some very eventful races; Nick Pearce retired from racing with a second in his final race. Adam Baker, showing so much promise in recent weeks, fractured his ankle in a rather unusual incident. And Gary Dallow claimed a fine third overall. Nothing too unusual there, you may say. But when you're made aware that Gary has only had a few come back rides and he is racing with an artificial right leg. With a specially adapted rear brake and a magnet that holds his boot to the footrest, Gary leaves most of the competition in his dust as he tackles the biggest jumps and the roughest of corners. He truly is an amazing character.
At the end of meeting everyone left knowing they had been involved in a great day's racing and the lucky and successful few carried home the magnificent McConnel- sponsored trophies.
Clee Hill Victors thank all the volunteer track marshals and helpers and the attending medical team. A very big thank you to Chris Yarwood for just about keeping the dust at bay and sponsors, McConnel of Ludlow .
