TESCO or a bridge? Why not both? I have great admiration for the intentions of the Plan B group but as M Lloyd notes using the site for small sales points however attractive is simply not economically viable. Similar ventures in various towns have struggled to find and keep tenants long before the current climate. Tesco is the only organisation at the moment with both means and interest in the site, and I suspect it is only a matter of time – and remember not all in the town are against them.
The Teme Valley News offers another option as it asks people to choose between Tesco and a second bridge. I think a new bridge that can handle the modern traffic would be ideal – but again there is the question of cost and who will fund the work in a season of cuts. Instead of choosing why not combine the two.
Including a bridge as a condition of a Tesco planning application would address the issue of supply lorries and add to the town. Yes it would eat into their proposed store space, but a smaller Tesco’s would still serve those who travel out for supermarkets, while being perhaps less hard to swallow for objectors.
