ADRIAN Kibbler, in his article Reasons to be Cheerful – Advertiser December 15 – says that once the Tesco decision has been taken "one way or the other....it will be time to let wounds heal and for the town to pull together ".
If the application is granted, Tenbury people can look forward to the destruction of their town and the loss of many of the family businesses which have provided an excellent service to the town for many years, and still do.
Hardly a basis for healing wounds. If, on the other hand, the application is refused, they can look forward to further applications from Tesco, which will no doubt continue its war of attrition against the people of Tenbury, with the expectation that their opposition to the scheme will eventually be worn down. These are tactics which have been successfully deployed by supermarkets with dire results for small market towns throughout the country.
Only if Tesco will accept another refusal as final will it be possible for the town to move on. It would help, however, if supporters of the Tesco scheme, will get behind the town in finding a more appropriate use of the Old Cattle Market site, such as has been proposed by the Tenbury Futures group.
