Oakengates 1 AFC Ludlow 2.
SEAN Evans was Ludlow’s hero on Saturday as his late brace ensured that Dave Cooper’s boys secured an impressive win against high-flying Oakengates.
The hosts - who went into the game top of the Mercian League Premier Division - were leading with 10 minutes remaining, but a penalty by Evans and a neat finish five minutes later ensured that Ludlow came away with the spoils.
“I thought we dominated the first-half and were really comfortable,” said Cooper.
“We played some decent football, but to be fair to Oakengates, they are not top for no reason and they showed they are a tough team to break down.
“The pleasing thing for me was that we came back from a goal down, we didn’t let it get to us and showed great character to grab an equaliser and, in the end, a winner.”
Cooper is hopeful of signing John Haycocks from Presteigne in time for the defender to play against Whitchurch on Saturday.
“We’re just awaiting international clearance,” said Cooper.
“He has played for Woofferton, Newbridge and New Radnor and can play anywhere across the back-four.
“We’ve had a few injuries lately, but it’s always good when you have more options to choose from.”
The win moves AFC Ludlow into fifth place in the league.
“It is a very competitive league and everyone is taking points off everyone else,” said Cooper.
“We are not a bad side and I was pleased with how we played on Saturday.”
